I have been out a lot lately, travelling, meeting with women entrepreneurs all over London, networking, reconnecting with friends. There seems to be a lot of movement in my every day life in the past weeks. I have always felt that things really speed up from mid October, because everyone is more and more aware of the approaching holiday season and the end of the year. It is not surprising. We all feel the pressure to achieve those goals, targets, finish projects. I noticed there are more invites to events going round, more webinars promoted, more meetings scheduled. Everyone is in a rush to accomplish more.
I have felt swept by this speedy energy too. There are more clients that need to be reached, more connections to make, more speaking gigs to be booked, more visibility opportunities to step into and they all require action and movement. Right? Not exactly, at least not in my experience.
I am a great believer in taking inspired action and not waiting for what you desire to come to you without even attempting to meet it half way. However, too much action can be counterproductive.
Ever wondered why you have not yet reached your goal, received 5 new clients, got invited to speak at that event or got that date you so desire despite the fact that you are constantly making an effort? It is probably not because you are not doing enough. It may be because you don’t have any space in your life or business for what you so desire.
Earlier this week, instead of taking constant action to receive the opportunities I desire in my business, I decided to focus on creating space in my office, in my diary and in my head for all those new opportunities I desire before doing anything else. I am far from being done and there is already one client opportunity that came from a very unexpected place, not to mention mental clarity and peace of mind. So if your actions have not produced the result you want yet, I invite you to try this too.
Creating new space for what you desire in your business and life
1. Let go of what no longer serves you
Look around. Is there anything in your environment, in your closet, your desk, your drawers, to do list that no longer supports or serves you? It is time to get rid of it. You will feel much lighter as a result. And this is a perfect season for it. As my friend and a talented photographer Samjhana Moon explains in her blog, as we prepare to spend more time indoors, it is a beautiful time to prepare the space and clear what is no longer required.
Clear your desk and drawers. This will release the stagnant energy and you will feel more empowered as a result.
Declutter your wardrobe. Not only will this create space but it will also give you a confidence boost and assist you in feeling prepared to say yes to unexpected opportunities to be more visible. No more excuses that you have nothing to wear.
Internally, you can clear the space too. Is there a belief or a pattern that you are aware of that no longer serves you? Release it. Write it out and burn it, if this sounds right for you. Or simply ask your inner wisdom to release it for you.
2. Prioritise
Prioritising your time, your most valuable resource in business, is a key skill. If you want to create space for new clients or other business opportunities, you need to prioritise your time. And as I learned during a very interesting talk recently, there can be only one top priority by definition. Choose one priority every day that is going to make the biggest impact or difference for you. Do the same at the beginning of every week and every month, making sure that your daily priority moves you towards your weekly and monthly priority.
Choosing main priority does not mean giving everything up. As a creative person with too many ideas I feel scattered easily. I know how difficult it is to focus on one thing only. But you don’t have to give up all your ideas, projects or plans. Create an idea box and put everything that is not an absolute priority right now in that box. You can come back to it later and knowing that you have it recorded means you don’t need to hold it in your mind any more, which of course frees up space.
3. Be still and connect with your inner wisdom
There is a lot of useful information and resources available to us (and of lot of useless too). But at some point, you need to stop receiving external input and tap into your internal resources. Your inner voice, if it’s anything like mine, will only speak to you when you give it time and space. Meditation is a must for me in my business and life. There are different ways of doing it, you don’t have to sit in silence for 15 minutes every day. You can try a walking mediation, being in nature, journalling first thing in the morning, asking question before going to bed and writing down the answers in the morning. Creating a daily routine when your mind is still and looking within helps you to achieve clarity and receive answers to important questions, so you don’t have to spend hours or days looking for those answers externally. This practice also builds self-trust.
Remember there can be no vacuum, so once you create the space by releasing what you no longer need or prioritising differently, you invite something new into your life. This is why I love doing intensive sessions so much: you are giving yourself and your business a much needed thinking space, both physical and mental, and leave with clarity about what you desire now and what step to take next.
